Why is this drug prescribed?

Bactroban is prescribed for the treatment of impetigo, a bacterial infection of the skin.

Most important fact about this drug

If the use of Bactroban does not clear your skin infection within 3 to 5 days, or if the infection becomes worse, notify your doctor.

How should you take this medication?

Do not use Bactroban more often or for longer than prescribed. Avoid contact with eyes. This drug is for external use only.

If you miss a dose

Apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule.

Storage instructions

Store at room temperature.

What side effects may occur?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue using Bactroban.

More common side effects may include:

  • Burning
  • pain
  • stinging

Less common side effects may include itching

Rare side effects may include:

  • Abnormal redness
  • dry skin
  • inflammation of the skin
  • nausea
  • oozing
  • skin rash
  • swelling
  • tenderness

Why should this drug not be prescribed?

If you are sensitive to or have ever had an allergic reaction to Bactroban or similar drugs, you should not use this medication. Make sure your doctor is aware of any drug reactions you have experienced.

Special warnings about this medication

Continued or prolonged use of Bactroban may result in the growth of bacteria that do not respond to this medication and can cause a secondary infection.

This drug is not intended for use in the eyes.

If your skin shows signs of an allergic reaction or irritation, stop using Bactroban and consult your doctor.

Possible food and drug interactions when taking this medication

There are no known interactions.

Special information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding

The effects of Bactroban during pregnancy have not been adequately studied. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. It is not known whether Bactroban appears in breast milk. Your doctor may advise you to discontinue breastfeeding until your treatment with this medication is finished.

Recommended dosage

Apply a small amount of this medication to the affected area 3 times a day. Cover the treated area with gauze if you want.
